Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635) born in Brouage,saintonge France. He was a french explorer and navigator, his father was a sea captain called Antoine Champlain and Marguerite Le Roy was his mom. When he was still young he was preparing to be mariner. He also went on voyages with his dad and uncle. (who was also a mariner) He studied cartography, navigation, astronomy and maths.In 1587 he joined the french army and became qautermaster of cavalry. The name of the commanding officer was Marechal D' Aumont. He (Champlain) joined his uncle who was a pilot-General, transportating Spanish soldiers from France to Spain fighting against The Netherlands and from England. In 1598 when he was in Seville in Spain, he was offered to command the 'St Julien' to go to the new world. In 1599 he sailed to the West-Indies, he was the commander of the vessel. He went on 21 voyages in his whole career! He visited many islands in 2 and a half years. When he returned he got pension from Prince Henry IV. He got famous for exploring Canada and finding a big river now called the St.Lawrence river. The St.Lawrence river is famous for being one of the largest rivers in the whole of Canada. But the biggest thing he is famous for is finding a country (Canada) which wasn't on the map! Other than an explorer he was a navigator, a cartographer, a diplomat, a chronichler, a soldier, a ethnologist, a geographer and a draughtsman. In Canada he is known as " Father of Canada".
